"You are not really screwed until you have a good story saved up, and someone to tell it to."

THE PROTAGONIST

Sandro begins writing his memories in 2020. Several drafts will follow over time, which also serve as an exercise for him to keep his memory sharp. Right from the start, Sandro describes incredible episodes that happened to him from childhood, of which no one in the family was aware. Giacomo, taken by surprise, begins to delve deeper and asks Sandro to add details and specifics each time. These are stories that range from sharp irony to drama and comedy; stories that are also a pleasure to read given Sandro the journalist’s essential, incisive, and effective style. The choice of episodes to film was based on identifying which of these tales left a stronger emotional mark on Sandro. And that they thus remain more vividly impressed in his mind, precisely because they are capable of evoking even today an emotion that transcends the passage of time.

THE ACCIDENT, 1956

"I remember my grandmother's profile, sitting in the front seat. Her paper-like hands, the delicate scent of roses. Even on the day she died, she chose to be there with me."

THE AMMO POUCH, 1969

"I was sure I could lose the policeman in the crowd. But the ammo pouch flew faster than me: I heard a whistle near my head and a sharp crack to my temple. Then darkness."

THE MORTAR, 1973

"I tried to warn the General Staff and the General: the calculations were wrong, the mortar shell would land too close to their position, thus ending up killing them all."

THE AMBERJACK, 1983

"It was then that a strange idea struck me, that even fish have a heart, perhaps a soul. From that day on, I never fished again."
