SYNOPSIS
The documentary begins ‘in medias res’: Sandro has been diagnosed with the disease, and together with his son Giacomo, he has embarked on a journey through memories, among old photographs and travels to the places of his childhood, the aim of which is to keep his memory constantly stimulated. As the stories resurface, Giacomo realizes that many episodes from his father’s life are true and proper incredible, surreal, and ironic adventures, and that the way to preserve them forever is to entrust them to the timeless language of cinema.
Father and son collect and transform Sandro’s Stories into true cinematic scenes, participating together in all phases of production. When it comes time for filming, Giacomo realizes that the memories of the Stories are inevitably becoming hazy, and that Sandro only recalls them in fragments. This long journey now takes on a new meaning for him: no longer that of preserving his father’s memory, but rather that of stealing as much time as possible from the disease to spend together, and to share with all the people who knew and loved Sandro.
CINEMA: HEALING AND DISCOVERY
The magic of filmmaking becomes a means of discovery and healing, as well as the tool to achieve the final objective. This is to leave Sandro an archive of memories in motion that keeps him anchored to himself for as long as possible. Filmed over the course of five years, the movie follows, on one hand, Sandro’s life living with the illness, and on the other, the collection of stories and the filmmaking process. Different narrative levels intertwine, just as different visual languages do, ranging from documentary shots to true cinematography.
In addition to offering a new perspective on illness, which is no longer seen as something inevitable but as an opportunity for transformation and beauty, 'Stories for Sandro' tells the journey of a father and son who rediscover the value of spending time together, finding each other and accompanying one another hand in hand in one last great adventure.
